There is an ever-growing group of gorgeous boutiques and concept stores, a lovely by-product of the burgeoning design scene in Sri Lanka. Here are some of our favourites.

1. L’Atelier Touché

504 R.A. De Mel Mawatha, Colombo 3 | Opening Hours: 10.30am – 6.30pm (Closed on Sundays) | 0112 081 784
An inspired collaboration between two friends, one French and the other Italian. This is a gorgeous shop, which automatically wants you to be as chic and stylish as the owners. The pieces are very wearable, with the chicness of its owners coming through even with the everyday staples they do. They have a stunning collection of jewellery from international designers and shoes designed by themselves and others, including Asalt. They also have a capsule collection of bags and swim wear. You will be stepping out feeling like you have just had a trip to Europe.

2. PR

41 Horton Place, Colombo 7 | Opening Hours: 10am – 6pm | 0112 699 921
This place oozes style and creativity; buy a piece here, from any of its many talented designers, and you will be proud to wear it. Their in-house brand Maus is revered for its clean cuts and simple sophistication; we love it too, for its great range of organic cotton T-shirts and dresses. PR’s curation of jewellery is stunning too. We particularly love Cher by Chevonne and Papillon du Thé. They have also started growing their men’s range, with jewellery and clothing. This is a superb place to go when looking for something unique. Brilliant to take stylish guests to and excellent spot for gift buying.

3. The Design Collective (TDC)

28 Stratford Avenue, Colombo 6 | Opening Hours: 10.15am – 6.45pm (they close at 6pm on Sundays) | 0112 596 329
A beautiful space that is a pleasure to shop at, TDC stocks a huge selection of fantastic Sri Lankan designers. They stock swimwear, casualwear, formalwear, gorgeous jewellery with semi-precious stones, excellent wrapping paper (which you can buy in a roll!), cards etc. We love this shop and never leave empty handed. The designers in the shop are all Sri Lankan and this is the focus of the store; it makes you proud to be a part of this country and its talent. The Design Collective is part of the Gandhara property, which gives you added things to look at when visiting TDC. We love Thisakya Senanayake Wijayaratne’s brand ‘The Moon and All Its Stars,’ for its very desirable and comfortable nightwear.

4. Urban Island

181 Sri Anagarika Dharmapala Mawatha, Colombo 7 | Opening Hours: 10am – 7pm | 0112 021 377
This contemporary Sri Lankan design store is a breath of fresh air to Colombo. They’ve got a great range of clothing designs, their own capsule collection (which we particularly love), swimwear, stylish homeware and plants in great pots, so you don’t have to hunt. They’ve got a lot of products, even some amazing spices, and everything is designed and made in Sri Lanka! This shop always inspires us; they certainly have their finger on the pulse of what’s hot in Sri Lanka and beyond. They’ve also got a lovely little café run by Kumbuk Kitchen to hit the spot on interesting food; the chicken wrap is divine.

5. Boutique at Horton Place

62 Horton Place, Colombo 7 | Opening Hours: 10am – 8pm (Closed on Sundays) | 075 979 6796
Sitting on the corner of Horton Place and Wijerama mawatha, The Boutique at Horton Place has brought in a large range of international brands: from Charlotte Tilbury make-up and DKNY bath towels, to Post It notes. It’s also a great place for large rolls of wrapping paper. Our favourite part of this store has to be the stationery section. They’ve got a retro-inspired Amercian-style diner for the foodies called Peppermint Cafe which is open 24 hours.

6. The Pelican

1st Floor of Shironhana Atelier, 21/3 Alfred House Gardens, Colombo 3 |Opening Hours: 9am -6.30pm | 011 259 8277

This stunning new Concept Store is a MUST visit for locals and tourists alike.  It houses a beautifully curated collection of Sri Lankan designers including Tharshana, Masha, Botanic Hues and Salvage Sri Lanka.  All of which we would happily own.  They also stock Caked by Amna, which are  delicious and slightly different from the usual cakes you can buy here.  We love this new store and afterwards  you can pop downstairs and buy some gorgeous flowers from Shironhana Atelier on the ground floor.

7. Buddhi Batiks

32 Ward Place, Colombo 7 | Opening Hours: 10am – 7pm (Closed on Sundays) | 0112 689 488
Buddhi Batiks offers creations made of batik, a Sri Lankan heritage textile that uses wax printing. They have elevated batik designs into very cool contemporary wear and have clothes that range from everyday wear to formalwear. If you’re looking for a batik sari to impress, this is the place to go.

8. Barefoot

704 Galle Road, Colombo 3 | Opening Hours: 10am – 7pm (11am-5pm on Sundays and Poya) 01125 89 305
This iconic brand was the original in showcasing Sri Lankan creativity. They are fabulous for their fantastic use of colour in their handloom fabrics, and they also sell gorgeous toys, ceramics, books and some Sri Lankan food and spices. They’ve got a charming café which on the weekends will have live music playing. Great for taking guests who want sophisticated and useable gifts to take back with them. There is also an art gallery on the premises, so if you’re lucky you’ll get to see an interesting exhibition too.
