There is a big café culture in Colombo and as time goes by the coffee and the offerings keep getting better. We have selected our favourites for a casual dining experience with friends, or for when you might want to hide away and take advantage of the free WI-FI.

There are places in life that will always remain with you once you have chanced upon them. Kiku sings to our soul; it has a beautiful interior which is light and airy while still just oozing sophistication & cool. It is always filled with interesting people, and they’ve created a community where they organize various things like Anime movie nights or community dinners where they explore mindful eating. The food is Japanese fusion. You can also find inspiration by reading the many cookbooks they have around the place. We have never had a bad meal and can happily say we love it all. The miso scrambled eggs, the cucumber salad and the lamb are all absolute musts.
70 Rosmead Place, Colombo 07 | Opening Hours: 8am-8pm, open till 11pm on weekend nights | 0112 690 028
Butter Boutique has two outlets now; both are nice places to hang out, but we would probably recommend the one on Rosemead Place. There is a cult following here; people go crazy for the Nutella swirls, the tres leches cake, and our personal favourite has always been the peanut butter and chocolate cake. This place is food porn.
The brand includes Café Kumbuk , Plus Nine Four and Kumbuk Kitchen we have included the whole family because we love them all. The mother and daughter team have a fantastic ethos and energy which they have brought to their respective cafes. They each offer slightly different fare and styles. The emphasis is on local flavours and dishes with a twist. They were the first to bring smashed avocado on bread to Colombo. Follow them on Instagram, they are very inspiring.

This little café has a modern urban vibe to it, you could be in London or Sydney, sipping your cold pressed juice and eating your power salad bowl packed with superfoods. It is small and gets busy so go and grab a table quickly. They also do great brunch options for the weekend like pulled chicken, or smashed avocado. You will love this place, we do.

If you love coffee, then this the place you want to get your fix. It has slightly weird opening times, but once you are there you will feel very happy sipping your coffee in this super trendy space.
30 Sea View Avenue, Colombo 03 | Opening Hours: 12pm-9pm (Open till 4pm on Sundays and closed on Mondays) |0114 382 838
This place has brought Poke bowls to us all in Colombo. You can choose from different proteins like tuna, teriyaki chicken, tofu and more, and then add more to the salad bowl; you have the choices of red rice, zoodles and sticky rice. As a side they have scrumptious cucumber avo bites and the poke nachos, which are delectable tempura battered seaweed chips that you use to scoop up the spicy soy marinated salmon and tuna sashimi. It’s mouth-watering and satisfying, and this satisfaction is made all the sweeter by knowing the food is healthy too.
11 Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo 07 | Opening Hours: 8am-9pm | 0112 675 111
A brilliant spot to meet up for breakfast with friends or go with your laptop in the afternoon to get away from the distractions of home. The interior has a colonial, eclectic feel to it. The food is innovative, and different from standard café fare, the hummus plate is yummy with pita and lots of crudités. They have different cakes on offer daily. It has a cult following and we understand why.
71 Rosmead Place, Colombo 07 | Opening Hours: 11am-11pm (Closed on Mondays) | 0117 386 565
They now have two branches, one on Havelock Road and the other on Rosemead place. We just love this restaurant; it is honest and simple home cooking with amazing flavours. No need to dress up, you can go in with your elasticated waistline and eat up; the pork dish is yummy and the crab in vermicelli noodles is a comfort and a half.
