One of the most exciting things to us when we arrived here was the tropical plants and flowers; it is possible to have fresh flowers in your home every day. If you have a garden, you can grow all your own herbs and vegetables, it’s possible to do this even on your balcony! Things grow so quickly here, it is amazing. When choosing your plants and flowers, just remember that in Colombo it is very humid, so even though that rose looks stunning at the shop, once in your garden it will not last.

Shiro Hana is a beautiful flower shop with many outlets around Colombo. They grow many of their own flowers on their farms up in the hill country, in Nuwara Eliya, while the rest they import from Holland. They have good quality flowers and are flexible. You can take your own vases and they will do arrangements according to your budget. Also brilliant for dinner parties, weddings etc. They’ve got various outlets around Colombo, but this one’s our favourite.

This is a very stylish plant shop; the owner knows her stuff and has it stocked full of gorgeous potted house plants. You can order stunning exotic flower arrangements; they also have a great collection of scented candles. Fair warning; Sand can be a little unpredictable in terms of opening hours so it’s a good idea to call first. They’re totally worth it. You can also find their stuff at Urban Island.

Poru has brought joy into our lives, they have a fantastic selection of flowers, including our current favourite pom pom marigolds! They do ingenious flower arrangements and all so tasteful. I challenge you not to buy from them! Yes they are expensive but all the flowers we have brought have lasted. Sadly though the flowers are not grown here, they are mostly imported.

An incredible place to visit for all your gardening needs, open at full capacity on the weekend, all the plants and equipment you need is sold here. Remember, a lot of the vendors will bring plants like roses and hydrangeas down from the cooler climes in the hills; sadly these kinds of flowers will not survive in Colombo, so don’t waste your money. It’s a nicely done waterfront park called the Diyatha Uyana, which is more or less right next to Water’s Edge, which means you can take the family and make a morning or afternoon of it once you’ve got your outdoorsy goodies.
