Buying toys isn’t difficult in Sri Lanka; the bigger question is how much throwaway plastic do you want in the house? There are more and more shops selling higher quality toys, and we have found some amazing online shops selling cute home-made activities and toys that I’m sure would love our support to grow and grow.

Opening Hours: 10am – 8pm | 5 Alexandra Pl, Colombo 00700 | 0114 625 800
ODEL has the most helpful staff and a fantastic range of toys for all ages. They also have a great book range. They sell international brands, so you can rely on quality.

2. Kids Unlimited

Opening Hours: 9am – 9pm | 75 Dutugemunu Street, Dehiwala | 0114 338 844
This is a huge store dedicated to kids; it sells every toy you can imagine, and sports stuff. They sell Marvel and Lego products, and they have good parking facilities. This is a good first port of call; be prepared, it is no Hamleys, but search and you will find.

3. Babybear Boutique

Opening Hours: 10am – 7pm (Open till 5pm on weekends) | 35 Pagoda Rd, Nugegoda | 077 350 6965
We love this place; it is great for new-born equipment and has high-quality gifts for children. You can often find stuff here that you wouldn’t find elsewhere, like awesome teepee tents and a great selection of wooden toys. They have a super helpful team too, so it is a joy to shop at. It should be noted though that most of their products are aimed at children from 0-6, so it’s not really a place for older children.

4. Penguin Toy Shop

Opening Hours: 9am – 6pm (Closed on Sundays) | 106-2/1 Prince Street, Colombo 11 (Pettah) | 0112 436 982
If you need lots of cheap toys, then this is the place. It’s perfect for filling a party bag. We aren’t sure about their products lasting more than a year though.

5. Milk and Honey

Opening Hours: 9am – 7pm (Open 10am – 5pm on Sundays) | 44a Horton Pl, Colombo 07 | 0112 696 256
This is one of the nicest shops to go to for toys and gifts for children. They stock Djeco, Vtech and Plum along with lots of other brands. They sell tasteful toys and you can always be happy taking your child there because whatever they choose will be educational and not totally plastic. They have a delicious café in the shop too that sell the best brownies in town; plus, they’re gluten free, so you feel healthy eating them.  They now have a store in the One Galle Face Mall on the 4th floor, opposite Adventure Zone.

T&T TIP: they also sell gorgeous lightweight clothing for kids and grownups. Just saying.

6. Cotton and Paper

Opening Hours: 10am – 6.30pm (Closed on Sundays) | 30, Doctor Lester, Sir James Pieris Mawatha, Colombo 06 | 077 289 6969
A recent addition to the Colombo scene, this shop sells lovely homeware items, but in this context, we love their selection of stationery and brilliant gifts for children. They do money boxes, fun water bottles, and mermaid cushions. It’s a great store to pop in to for different present ideas.

7. Cool Planet

Opening Hours: 10am – 9pm | 61 Isipathana Mawatha, Colombo 05 | 0112 505 190
You can buy all the generic toys here, but we think they’re best suited for Lego, Barbies and board games.

8. MotherCare

Opening Hours: 10am – 8pm | 7 R. A. De Mel Mawatha, Colombo 05 | 0115 882 882
The main Mothercare has their top floor dedicated to the wonderful ELC range of toys. They are well made products and are guaranteed to be safe. Also, it’s great if you’re looking for non-toxic paints and arts and crafts things.

9. Pom’s Island | email:[email protected]

They make adorable non-toxic painted wooden toys. The toys are deliberately simple in design to encourage creativity and imagination. We are so happy we found Poms Island and only wish we had young enough kids to enjoy their toys.

10. Sophia & Mila Sensory Play

077 038 7274

Amazing at all things playdough. Yes, we could make our own but really do we actually want to? Eeerrrr NO! They make playdough free of toxins and nasties, and it is beautifully packaged to include cutters and wooden tools if you want. They often do themed packages around the holiday times. Very cute for gifts. It has T&T’s support.
