The railway lines in Sri Lanka are the remnants of the British rule, there are 4 main railway lines across the island which are all breath-taking and absolutely worth experiencing as an expat, a local or a tourist. Taking the train won’t break the bank either, and it is far more enjoyable than travelling by bus! The main train station is in the Colombo Fort; it is a bustling and slightly chaotic experience, but you will fall in love with the charm of the place and be glad of the adventure. Be prepared for delays and feeling slightly grubby at the end of the experience. Unless you have booked ahead for a 1st or 2nd Class ticket, you will not be guaranteed a seat (you might have to stand or share an extended seat in 3rd class, if it’s crowded). AC is only in 1st class, there is, however, an enormous sense of adventure and a wholehearted experience awaiting you. These are two useful sites to gain more information from: and

st Line runs between Colombo –Hikkaduwa-Galle-Matara (runs along the coastline, stunning)
nd line Colombo- Kandy – Nanu Oya (Nuwara Eliya)-Ella-Badulla (this is a must; you can book the observation car which has AC and allows you to take in the scenery)
rd Line Colombo- Anuradhapura- Mannar-Jaffna (overnight train, for the adventurer)
th Line Colombo- Batticaloa (the East Coast)
